Celebrating QLD Small Business week with great ideas!
BIZ Tank 2019 was our first ever event to bring local business and budding entrepreneurs to battle out their pitch to a panel of business experts! This event was made possible by The Department of Employment and Training QLD Small Business Week 2019 initiative.
The night was made extra special with two inspiring guest entrepreneurs to attend the event as judges and mentors. Young Entrepreneur and Tech Start up Scott Millar (founder and CEO of BOP Industries) and Digital Marketing and Technology expert Luke Humble. This dynamic duo were a wealth of information for all that attended the 1.5 hour mentoring session before the finals, teaching us tips to growing a personal brand, building valuable connections, developing you business ideas and promoting your business using technology. It was inspiring to know that both these Scott & Luke have roots here in Hervey Bay knowing that success can begin in our own backyard not just the big city!
Our top 6 finalists pitched their ‘Big Idea’ in a fun and innovative setting. Replicating the ‘Shark Tank TV Concept’ our crew set up a Live Facebook Stream and TV outside for the guests to watch the pitch live on the night. This concept added an element of fun, and has been a great learning tool for those to reflect on their pitch at a later date. The night was made more exciting for all applicants to have key group of local members from Fraser Coast Regional Council, The Fraser Coast Chronicle, One Agency, Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre and other community members to connect with our finalists. We believe creating these valuable community connections are key to establishing successful business journeys for start-ups, so we loved that this event could bring entrepreneurs a bit closer to the community.
Our finalists had had some tremendous ideas from a sustainable and safe fill for weighted blankets to treat anxiety, art workshops for healing and social connection, empowering health and well-being workshops, school programs starting social enterprises, an app for young women to empower and support them, and an immersive virtual reality experience for young school students to learn about environmental protection. If you want to see any of them jump over to our Facebook page videos…they are great!
We were so excited to announce our first ever BIZ Tank 2019 winner was Shakira Pearse from Maryborough State High School with our app, and runner up Michelle Valdivia from Miss Shelly Seashells and her idea to host Art Education Programs in the region.
Our People’s Choice continued over the weekend gaining an immense amount of public support through the Community Cubed Facebook Page, with a close result between Enviro and Alicia Wade Coaching - with Alicia winning by a few votes in the end.
The winners were awarded a Community Cubed membership allowing them to sell products in the collaboration shop and gain access to our innovation space that offers business building through workshops, mentoring and industry connections. We also had our special guest mentors provide a one-on-one mentoring consultation with the winners, vouchers and the winner receiving a full-day ticket to the Fraser Coast Drones & Innovation Showcase being held on June 19th 2019.
A fabulous night was had by all, and we are so excited to bring the business community another pitching event in the near future. If you are interested in sponsoring a business event through the Community Cubed please contact our Business Manager.
Lastly a big congratulations to all our finalists, without you the night would not have been a successful! We wish you all the best along your business journey, but remember we will be there to support you along the way…at our little business family Community Cubed!
